Music

Intent

At Lowercroft, our music curriculum is designed to provide all pupils with a rich, immersive experience in music that fosters their creativity, cultural understanding, and personal growth. We aim to:

·      Instill a passion for music that extends beyond the classroom, inspiring pupils to engage with music as listeners, creators, and performers.

·      Develop musical skills and knowledge through our structured curriculum to ensure progression in musical skills, including singing, instrumental performance, composition, and music appreciation. We aim for pupils to achieve a strong foundation in both practical and theoretical aspects of music.

·      Foster cultural awareness recognising the diverse backgrounds of our pupils and aim to provide opportunities to explore a wide array of musical genres and traditions from around the world, enhancing their understanding of global cultures.

·      Support emotional and social development through music, developing pupils’ confidence, resilience, and social skills, which are crucial for their overall development and well-being.

Implementation

Our music curriculum is delivered effectively through the Sing Up Music programme which has been designed and written by music specialists.

Sing Up Music provides us with a solid foundation to deliver a creative and engaging programme of high-quality classroom music activity. Through Sing Up Music, we are able to offer a complete and progressive library of resources, from Reception to Year 6, that meets the EYFS Curriculum (Expressive Arts and Design), the National Curriculum and the suggested approaches of the Model Music Curriculum.

Our music curriculum provides opportunities beyond the classroom too, including signing assemblies, music clubs such as choir, and opportunities to perform in school and community events, fostering a love of music and performing. Our music education is also facilitated by specialist music teachers who provide quality instruction and opportunities for children to learn a range of musical instruments from Year 2 onwards.

Music is also used in all classrooms as an aid to classroom practice and routines, from calming mindfulness to classroom exercise, providing bursts of energy as a break between sessions. We also regularly use songs and actions to learn key facts and knowledge in other areas of the curriculum.

Impact

The impact of our music curriculum is evidenced through observations and performances that show pupils demonstrate enthusiasm and participation in music lessons, with a number of pupils choosing to take part in extracurricular music activities. Pupils can articulate their understanding of different musical genres, demonstrating an appreciation for diversity in music and performances showcase a range of styles reflective of the diversity within our school community.

In summary, our commitment to delivering a high-quality music curriculum at Lowercroft ensures that every pupil not only acquires musical knowledge and skills but also develops as an individual, ready to appreciate and engage with the world of music throughout their lives.
