Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation

At Lowercroft, our Writing Curriculum goes far beyond the minimum expectations set out in the National Curriculum. Through a carefully curated progression of high‑quality texts and writing outcomes (detailed in our Curriculum Map and Progression in Writing documents),  pupils experience a rich, ambitious and thoughtfully sequenced journey from Reception to Year 6.

Our approach ensure:

Exceptional breadth and depth of reading - Across the school, children encounter an extensive range of genres, authors and text types including narrative, poetry, persuasive writing, explanation, biography, discussion, guides, reports and extended fiction. Each year group revisits and deepens writing forms to build mastery over time, ensuring genuine progression in skills, confidence and independence.

Commitment to meaningful diversity - The texts at the heart of our curriculum represent a wide spectrum of cultures, histories, voices and experiences. Children meet:

  • global majority authors, characters and contexts
  • stories that explore migration, identity, activism and belonging
  • texts reflecting differing family structures, cultural traditions and lived experiences
  • a balance of modern, classic, traditional and global literature

This ensures every child sees themselves reflected and every child explores worlds beyond their own.

Rigorous progression in writing knowledge and skills - The accompanying Progression in Writing document sets out, year by year, how pupils build strong foundations in:

  • composition and structure
  • sentence variety and grammar
  • transcription and spelling
  • punctuation
  • vocabulary development
  • editing, evaluation and authorial voice

This progression surpasses statutory requirements and prepares children for writing with fluency, precision and purpose.

Mandatory and supplementary texts - Each half term includes a mandatory core text, shown through markings or shading in our documents. Teachers may also use a supplementary text where appropriate, enabling deeper exploration of themes, comparison across authors, or broader enrichment linked to the core unit. This balance of consistency and professional autonomy ensures both fidelity to the curriculum and responsiveness to pupils’ needs.

A curriculum that inspires writers - Above all, our Writing Curriculum is designed to nurture thoughtful, creative, confident young writers. Through high‑quality literature, rich discussion, purposeful writing and a strong emphasis on editing and improving, our pupils develop the skills and enthusiasm needed to thrive as writers throughout their education and beyond.
