Safeguarding
Safeguarding at Lowercroft Primary School
At Lowercroft Primary School, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is a fundamental responsibility, as outlined in the Department for Education’s guidance “Keeping Children Safe in Education.” This means we are committed to protecting children from harm, preventing impairment of their health or development, ensuring they grow up in safe and nurturing environments, and taking action to help every child achieve the best possible outcomes.
We believe that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, visitors, and volunteers who come into contact with children and their families are expected to understand their role in keeping children safe. At Lowercroft, we are committed to creating a safe, secure, and supportive environment where children and adults alike feel confident to speak up about any concerns they may have—whether for themselves or for others.
Our Senior Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Mrs J McGadie (Headteacher).
Our Designated Safeguarding Leads are Mr M Roberts (Deputy Headteacher).
Our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads are Mrs S Kay (KS2 Lead), Mrs S Parkinson (KS1 Lead/SENDco) and Mrs Gray (Pastoral Lead)
Operation Encompass
Lowercroft Primary School is part of Bury Encompass, an initiative designed to safeguard and support children who have experienced domestic abuse. Exposure to such situations can significantly affect a child’s wellbeing, even if they are not physically harmed. Witnessing emotional or physical distress can be deeply traumatic.
Operation Encompass is a partnership between Greater Manchester Police and local schools. It ensures that when police attend a domestic abuse incident involving a child, the school’s Key Adults are informed by 9:00am the following school day. This allows us to offer timely, tailored support in a safe and familiar setting—whether through silent monitoring or more visible intervention, depending on the child’s needs and wishes.
The aims and procedures of Operation Encompass have been communicated to all parents and governors, and are included in our Safeguarding Policy, which is available on our school website.
At Lowercroft Primary School, the Key Adults for Operation Encompass are:
Mrs J McGadie (Headteacher) and Mr M Roberts (Deputy Headteacher)

Wake Up Wednesday is an initiative from National Online Safety, offering clear, parent-friendly guides about popular apps, games, devices and online trends. Each guide provides practical, up-to-date advice to help families stay informed and confident in supporting their children’s digital lives.
Children often use different websites and apps from the adults around them, and it can sometimes be hard to keep up. However, the things that help keep children safe online are often the same as those that keep them safe offline.
Here are some key ways to support your child:
-
Encourage critical thinking – talk about what they see online, how to recognise reliable information, and how to spot fake news, fake followers or scams.
-
Discuss online relationships – share your experiences of healthy and unhealthy relationships, both online and offline.
-
Show them how to report concerns – help your child understand how to report worrying or inappropriate behaviour, for example through the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP) or the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF).
At Lowercroft Primary School, we believe that keeping children safe online is a shared responsibility between school and home. By working together and having open, honest conversations, we can help our pupils become confident, responsible and safe digital citizens.
